Today was a big day for sports news and both stories deserve a take.
Jürgen Klopp ist Bundestrainer
This one is straightforward. Klopp signed a four-year contract at the DFB campus in Frankfurt today, officially taking over as Germany's national coach. He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned on July 3 after Germany's early World Cup exit against Paraguay. His first game on the touchline will be September 24 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands, the opening match of the Nations League.
The right call. Klopp is one of the most credible and charismatic coaches in the world. What he built at Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool was not just tactical, it was cultural. Co-trainers Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and Sven Bender follow him to the DFB. The two who were with him at Liverpool brings continuity and a proven system. Germany needed someone who could reconnect a fan base that has been increasingly disconnected from the national team. Klopp can do that. Full confidence in this one.
LeBron James goes to the Philadelphia 76ers
This one is harder to process. LeBron announced Friday he is heading to the Philadelphia 76ers. He joins a starting lineup that already includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Jaylen Brown on a two-year deal worth $8 million with a player option.
In his statement, LeBron said: "I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time."
That is exactly what ring chasing sounds like. And I said earlier that Miami was LeBron's first ring chase. Philadelphia makes it the second. If he wins a title with the Sixers he would become the first player in NBA history to win a championship with four different franchises. That is the record he is going for. Nothing wrong with ambition at 41, but let us be honest about what this is.
The bigger question is whether this roster can actually function. Embiid, Maxey, Jaylen Brown and now LeBron James. That is four players who want the ball in their hands in crucial moments. Four alphas, one ball, one coach in Nick Nurse who already had a complicated dynamic with some of those names. Maybe it works. Maybe LeBron finds the role player in himself at this stage of his career and wins his second assist title while everyone else scores. But the chemistry math is genuinely complicated here and I am not convinced this ends with a ring.
A LeBron James 76ers jersey is going to look strange no matter how many times you see it. That part is just a fact.
