Better Than McDonalds is out and it delivers. "King Taco" is track four on Gangrene's fifth album and now it gets the official video treatment.
On "King Taco" the Alchemist adds hours, minutes and seconds to his weightlifting routine and would rather "be doing the serving than critiquing how the burger tastes." That phrase perfectly sums up the Gangrene job description. They are not reviewers, critics or commentators. They make the food. The album title says it all and "King Taco" delivers the thesis statement explicitly.
Ab-Soul floats in between calling himself the prophet who they fear and telling "a little bit of hate will take you a long way." Ab-Soul and The Alchemist have a working relationship that goes back years — their collaborative energy is natural and "King Taco" is another example of why that pairing works. Ab-Soul brings a different register to the track, looser and more philosophical than the Gangrene default, which is exactly what the track needs for contrast.
The full Better Than McDonalds tracklist is worth noting: Estee Nack on "The Xtract," Rome Streetz on "Gas Factory," Armand Hammer on "Errybody," Meyhem Lauren on "Microscopic Matter," Boldy James on "Sasquatch" and Wildchild on "Proper Etiquette." That guest list is a curated statement about where Gangrene sits in the underground ecosystem. Nobody on that tracklist is there for reach or recognition. Everyone is there because they belong.
When we covered the first video from this album a few weeks ago we noted that the announcement alone was worth paying attention to. The full project confirms what the rollout suggested: Better Than McDonalds is one of the strongest Gangrene albums to date.
