Cookin Soul put a new remix on Bandcamp today: "Set Of Keys", rebuilt on the E-mu SP-1200. The source is the Fat Joe track with Pusha T and Dre from Organized Rhyme, and the SP1200 version went up on October 19, 2026.

The Original: Set Of Keys

"Set Of Keys" is track 10 on Organized Rhyme, the Fat Joe album that came out on August 28, 2026 via RNG and EMPIRE. Cool & Dre produced the original beat. The official video followed on October 2, and a few days later Styles P took the instrumental for his freestyle Set Of P's. Now the song gets its next life from Valencia.

Cookin Soul on the SP-1200

Cookin Soul has been part of the US mixtape circuit since the mid-2000s. His remix tapes are a format of their own, and his work with Larry June, starting with Orange Season in 2016, carried his sound to a much bigger audience.

The SP-1200 is the key word in the title. E-mu released the sampler in 1987. It records at 12 bit and 26.04 kHz with roughly ten seconds of total sample time, and that limitation is exactly where its sound comes from. Drums get crunchy, samples get dusty, and everything sits a little rougher in the mix. Pete Rock and Large Professor built classics on this machine. Cookin Soul runs his own drum kits through vintage hardware, the SP-1200 included, so the remix fits right into how he works.

The result is a beautiful Boom Bap track that sounds like it came straight out of the 90s. The drums carry that dusty 12-bit weight, and the whole thing feels like a tape you just pulled out of an old crate.

Back to the Bronx Sound

Fat Joe came up in D.I.T.C., the Bronx crew built on crate digging. Putting "Set Of Keys" on SP-1200 drums pulls the song closer to that era. Pusha T on a 12-bit beat feels just as natural, his bars have always lived on hard, minimal production.

For me, this is the kind of remix that makes a release worth revisiting. The album version has the big Cool & Dre sound, and Cookin Soul gives the same verses a second room to breathe in.

The remix is up now on Cookin Soul's Bandcamp.
