Two vets with decades in the game, reminding everyone that reverence has to be earned.
"Only Some" pairs Brooklyn's Agallah The Don with Philadelphia DJ legend DJ Too Tuff for a Cuzzo Sosay-produced cut off Agallah's album Don't Kill The Messenger. Directed by Mister Softee, the visual carries the whole message in the title. Only some figures in hip-hop deserve to be revered, and these two make the case that they belong on that list.
Agallah The Don, born Angel Luis Aguilar in New York, has been active since 1993. Formerly known as 8-Off the Assassin, a member of the Diplomats-affiliated Purple City, and CEO of his own Propain Campaign label. He is both a rapper and a producer with a deep catalog and a well-earned reputation as a ghostwriter and beatmaker for other artists. His 2006 solo album You Already Know featured production from DJ Premier and The Alchemist. Three decades in, Agallah keeps putting out material at a relentless pace, and Don't Kill The Messenger is the latest chapter.
DJ Too Tuff is a genuine Philadelphia legend. The spearhead of the legendary Tuff Crew, dubbed Philly's first rap supergroup, best known for the platinum single "My Part of Town," still the Philly anthem. His lightning-fast scratches defined the group's abrasive, hard-hitting sound that translated New York energy into something distinctly Philadelphia. His story runs deep and rough, from the heights of Tuff Crew through years in the wilderness and back to the culture. Today he holds down DJ duties for OT The Real and connects to the Black Soprano Family world. His presence on "Only Some" adds exactly the kind of turntable pedigree the track's thesis demands.
