Brainorchestra – BOOGEY MAN
Brainorchestra's BOOGEY MAN is probably my starting point this week.
The New Jersey producer and rapper wrote, produced, arranged and mastered the entire project himself. Seven vocal tracks are followed by their instrumental versions, and the sound stays exactly where you would want a Brainorchestra record to sit: sample chops, breakbeats, hypnotic loops and enough space for his own bars.
The other interesting part is how it is being released. BOOGEY MAN is available through Bandcamp and Patreon rather than the usual streaming platforms. In 2026, choosing to keep a project inside a smaller direct-to-listener ecosystem almost feels like part of the artistic decision.
doseone, Fatboi Sharif & steel tipped dove – Truth Ugly
Truth Ugly is the record furthest outside the lines this week.
doseone has spent decades bending rap language into strange shapes, from cLOUDDEAD and Anticon onward. Fatboi Sharif approaches underground rap with a completely different kind of theatrical weirdness. Put both over production from steel tipped dove and doseone and you get something that was never going to sound particularly normal.
The eight-track project grew out of sessions around doseone and steel tipped dove's All Portrait, No Chorus and eventually turned into its own thing. The result sits somewhere between experimental rap, noise, electronic music and whatever category is left when none of those descriptions quite work.
Exactly the kind of record Bandcamp is still useful for finding.
Conway The Machine – Diggwutumsayn!
Conway The Machine is back in rollout mode.
"Diggwutumsayn!" arrived Friday with a video directed by Marques Mosley and sets up his upcoming OTIS album, currently expected on November 20. The reported guest list includes Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Method Man, Kool G Rap and Flee Lord, which already puts the project firmly on the radar.
Conway does not need much explanation in this column. The attraction remains the same: a distinctive voice, grimy production choices and a connection to the Buffalo/Griselda lane that still matters even as that sound has spread much further into rap.
John Legend ft. Clipse – Bodies On The Floor
John Legend and Clipse is not necessarily the pairing I expected to include here, but Pharrell producing "Bodies On The Floor" changes the equation.
The track comes from Legend's Muse album and places Pusha T and Malice against a much smoother backdrop than the records we would normally associate with Clipse. The contrast is the interesting part: Legend carries the melodic side while Clipse retain enough edge that the collaboration does not turn into simple crossover decoration.
The black-and-white Paul Hunter video arrived this week.
Graphwize – 6 Beats Deep, Vol. 1
One smaller Bandcamp release worth mentioning is Graphwize's 6 Beats Deep, Vol. 1.
It is exactly what the title suggests: six older beats made on an MPC 2000XL and ASR-10, pulled back out and collected as a short instrumental project. There is no need to build a huge story around it. For anyone interested in samplers, beat tapes and the production side of hip-hop, that is already enough of a reason to check it.
