We already covered the first full trailer when it dropped last month. The D23 Special Look is a different animal.
A new trailer for "Avengers: Doomsday" was unveiled at the D23 Disney Entertainment Showcase by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige alongside Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. It focuses on supervillain Victor von Doom, played by Downey. The special look is the same trailer that was shown behind closed doors at SDCC last month, but now it's online for the world to pore over.
In the footage, largely narrated by Sue Storm, we get some crucial Doctor Doom context, as it's heavily implied that he's embarking down a path of villainy following the death of his wife and child. Plus we see Doom raising an army of Sentinels from the dead. That origin context changes the texture of the character entirely. Doom as a man who lost everything before he became a threat is a more interesting premise than Doom as pure power. This Special Look commits to that framing.
Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell confirmed their return as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, breaking the peace they had found at the end of Endgame. "Now, we know that there's nothing this crowd loves more than a happy ever after," said Atwell. "And Steve Rogers was so close to getting his at the end of Avengers: Endgame," Evans added. "We should've known better."
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds also crashed the presentation via video message, begging for a spot in the cast. The crowd energy at D23 was exactly what Marvel needed heading into December.
The recent MCU run has been inconsistent. The first full trailer and now this Special Look are the most encouraging signs yet that Doomsday might actually deliver. December 18.
